Alabama No. 4

To the south of it is a strip of almost flat land, known as the black belt because of its dark soils. The southeastern part of the state is known as the Wire Grass Zone because it was once covered with coarse grass called wire grass.
For many years, the coastal plain was the heart of the cotton fields. It is gradually turning into an area where livestock graze and many different crops are grown.
Rivers, lakes and coastal waters
The Alabamas are drained by three main river systems. The Tennessee River flows into Alabama from Tennessee. It flows west through Northern Alabama and then north to join the Ohio River. Other major Alabama rivers flow into the Gulf of Mexico. The mobile river system consists of several important rivers. The Tombigbee River and its main tributary, the Black Warrior River, drain the western part of the state. The Kusa and Talla Pusa Rivers flow through East Central and Eastern Alabama. They join near Montgomery to form the Alabama River, which flows southwest to the Tombigbee River. North of Mobile, the Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers join to form the Mobile River, which flows south into Mobile Bay. The Chat-tnhuchi is the main river of Southeastern Alabama. Guntkrsville Lake is the largest of many lakes in the state.
The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Project (Tenn-Tom) was designed to provide a waterway from the Tennessee Valley to the Gulf of Mexico via the Tombigbee River. It includes a canal in the northeast corner of the Mississippi that connects the rivers.
The total coastline of Alabama in the Gulf of Mexico is 85 kilometers (53 miles) long. If you add the coastlines of bays, gulfs and coastal islands, the total coastline will be 977 kilometers (607 miles).
Climate
People sometimes think of Alabama as an uncomfortably hot, tropical state, but this impression is false. In fact, there is a wide variety of climate from the highlands in the north to the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico.
Winter temperatures in the southern half of the state rarely fall below zero. Snow falls so rarely that many children have never seen snowfall. In the northern part of the state, the winter is not so mild. North-westerly winds bring cold gusts, but they are usually short and accompanied by mild weather.
Summer temperatures tend to be about the same across the state. Summer is long, but prolonged heat waves are almost unknown. Along the coast, hot days are replaced by frequent breezes blowing from the Gulf of Mexico. The nights are cool and comfortable even in the middle of summer. In the north, summer temperatures are softened by higher altitudes and cool forest shade. Spring and autumn are long and delightful. Autumn lasts from the beginning of September until the end of Thanksgiving.
